One of my favorite projects to date, I got to work with a friend to help brand her growing online and brick-and-mortar vintage shop. Coming up with a custom silhouette that is based off of the owner herself was the jumping off point for this logo and design. We wanted to come up with something that was quirky yet timeless, much like the treasures that she sells in her shop!
Some various logos I've worked on for clients over the years. Coming up with a quick and concise way to present a brand is one of my favorite puzzles to solve. I like to come up with clever marks that often have a double-meaning and can stand on their own of compliment a logotype. My experience working with all sorts of clients, from small creative businesses to large professional groups, has given me a chance to stretch my skills in many directions.
The Metal Shop
Another fun and challenging brand experience was coming up with an identity for the Metal Shop, a custom furniture and product line out of Carrboro, NC. The owner has a pension for industrial design and Chevy orange, both of which made their presence known in my work.
The challenge came in creating a moniker that would use all three of the company initials, TMS, without making them too obvious. We pushed the branding out further into t-shirt and hoodie designs, informational cards, and lots of variations on the logo-mark to be used in various places. I love the work this brand creates so it was fun to bring home a few of their pieces to live at my home after we wrapped up the work!
Class on the Grass was an exciting yoga and community event I got to be a part of. I worked on the branding, collateral, and online presence for for this event that was put on by LuluLemon, Natty Greenes Brewing, and Downtown Greensboro.
I wanted to create a look that was inviting to the community but was energized and yoga-inspired. The event included local brews, local bands, and a whole lot of locals getting their yoga on in the middle of the Greensboro Grasshoppers NewBridge Bank Park.
Westerwood Tavern literally was my neighborhood bars for many years and I spent many a night here while in my twenties, so it felt perfectly fitting to do the new identity work for this gem of a place.
After doing some research on the neighborhood itself, I realized it ( and the bar) got its name from a small Scottish town. It is also a neighborhood that sits in the center of our city, just outside of downtown and right off of several bustling major roads, but it is at the same time secluded, quiet, and community of it's own. This notion and the Scottish roots gave me the idea to create a logo with an interconnected or braided feel to show how this bar and neighborhood weaves itself into the larger fiber of our city. This design also pays homage to a main ingredient in all of my favorite beers- hops! The quirky tagline was the last detail to go into this fun project.
Exploratory Design is a Mapping Solutions and Cartography business located in North Carolina. This client wanted to do something graphic and clever to present her brand and I was excited to work on a project that was totally outside of my comfort zone.
We went with some directional motifs that played off of the compass rose and other map elements. The logo can be used on its own, with the logotype, or in a repeat pattern to really round out the brand identity.
Event posters are some of my favorite projects to work on because each one comes with its own unique set of requirements depending on setting, season, and event. I often get to use my illustration skills and love of repeating elements in these projects so they are always fun to jam on.
Hand-drawn type ads
These concept ads were a personal project that really stretched my hand-lettering abilities. Inspired by the likes of Jessica Hische and Mary-Kate McDevitt, I came up with phrases and color schemes to represent the summer items in the store. Coming up with the lettering styles and flourishes was the first task, then I played with the items to come up with custom layouts for each. Though I am no hand-lettering expert, it is something I love and hope to incorporate into a future project.
Lead Your City Campaign
Lead Your City was a city-wide campaign that focused on bringing engaging speakers and innovative ideas to young professionals and leaders in our city. It was so much fun to work on the identity for this campaign from the ground up. I got to come up with custom illustrations to represent each of the events and areas of town. Working in a minimal line-style was the basis for creating a cohesive style across all of pieces.

The Sweet Life
The Sweet Life magazine layout combined one of my illustrations with an article on creative uses for honey outside of the kitchen. Layout design is one of my favorite things to do because I think you have to be deceivingly clever to do something creative with type and imagery. From a two-page layout to a hundred-page book, I am surprisingly interested in character and paragraph styles.
These illustrative ads for AirBnB were another personal project that I got to play around with my drawing styles on. I looked up actual AirBnB listings in each of these parts of the world and recreated them in simple, geometric, colorful illustrations. Working on the little details like doors and balconies on each of these homes is something I could do all day.
My work in graphic design started with my patterns and illustrations so they will always have a special place in my aesthetic. Whether playing with the tension of positive and negative space in a pattern or coming up with original icons for a project, starting in a sketchbook is how all of my work begins.
